Home     /     Blog     /     How to Measure Your Bed for Foam Dog Stairs
By Mr.Sun

To measure a bed for foam dog stairs, record the floor-to-mattress height, the available floor footprint and the width of the approach. These measurements are more useful than the bed’s size name. A king-size bed can be lower than a single bed, and mattress thickness changes the landing height.

Measure to the actual landing

Place a tape measure vertically from the floor to the top surface your dog will step onto. Include the mattress and any topper normally used. Do not measure only to the frame, because that leaves out part of the climb.

Take the measurement at the intended access point. A thick duvet may obscure the edge; identify the stable landing surface beneath it rather than measuring to a loose fold of bedding.

Measure the available floor rectangle

Record the distance the stairs can extend out from the bed and the width available beside nearby furniture. Include door swings, drawers and walking routes. Use tape on the floor to outline a candidate footprint before ordering.

A product that technically fits between furniture can still leave an awkward approach. Consider the space for your dog to line up with the stairs rather than turning sharply at the first step.

Request a complete stair drawing

Ask for overall height, width and depth, plus each tread depth and step rise. If the steps are rounded or sloped, request a side profile. The highest point on a soft stair is not always the same as a firm flat landing.

Compare the final step to the mattress height. Ask the supplier how the top should meet the furniture and whether a gap is acceptable for that design. Do not add improvised blocks underneath to compensate for an unsuitable height.

Include loading and floor conditions

Check the model’s stated capacity and intended use. Foam may compress under load, so a sample should be assessed according to the supplier’s instructions. A dimension drawing alone cannot show how the product will feel during use.

Tell the supplier whether the floor is carpet, tile or another surface. Inspect the non-slip base and any securing method on that surface. Follow the product instructions rather than assuming its weight will keep it in place.

Send a useful enquiry

  • Floor-to-landing height with units.
  • Maximum available product depth and width.
  • Photograph of the approach and furniture edge.
  • Intended dog’s weight and any relevant access needs.
  • Flooring type and whether the stairs will be moved often.
  • Requested cover and cleaning requirements.

Keep the measurements together with the product reference so that different models can be compared against the same brief. If someone else places the order, share the drawing rather than relying on a verbal description of the bed.

Check again when the sample arrives

Follow recovery instructions for a compressed product, measure it on a level floor and compare it with the specification. Introduce your dog gradually once placement has been checked. For a dog with mobility difficulties, obtain veterinary guidance on the appropriate route rather than selecting solely by dimensions.

Repeat the measurement if you change the mattress, add a topper or move the bed. A previously suitable stair height may no longer match the new setup.
