Home     /     Blog     /     PU vs Fabric Covers for Foam Climbing Blocks
By Mr.Sun

PU-coated and fabric covers give foam climbing blocks different surface characteristics, but the material label alone is not enough to select a set. Compare the complete cover construction, its cleaning instructions and how it performs on the actual block shape.

Clarify what the material description means

Ask for the full fabric specification. A PU-coated cover has a coating and a supporting textile; a fabric cover may be woven, knitted or another construction. Different grades within each group can behave differently.

Request a physical swatch in the proposed colour and a finished sample. A flat swatch helps assess surface feel, while the finished piece shows seams, corners and fit. Neither should be replaced by a screen image alone.

Compare cleaning routines

A wipe-clean description should come with an approved cleaning method. Ask which agents may be used, whether rinsing is required and how the cover should dry. Do not assume any household disinfectant is compatible with a coated surface.

For a removable fabric cover, confirm whether machine washing is allowed and at what settings. Check whether the cover retains its fit after the recommended cleaning process. The foam insert may require separate care even when the cover is washable.

Inspect the construction at corners

Look closely at stitching, zipper placement and the way the cover follows the shape. Corners and curved sections can reveal tension or excess material that is less apparent on a flat face. Check that fasteners remain appropriately enclosed during intended use.

Ask whether a damaged cover can be replaced individually. A replacement programme may be more useful than purchasing a large set of spare covers without confirming that they fit the supplied production version.

Assess feel and movement

Try the sample in an approved low arrangement on the intended floor surface. Observe movement between components and the floor. Surface grip depends on the complete combination, so a general material label cannot establish stability.

Use the product’s stated age range and instructions, and supervise play. Remove a component if a damaged cover exposes foam. No choice of cover material makes an unapproved high stack suitable.

A supplier comparison record

  • Cover material composition and any coating specification.
  • Colour reference and accepted shade variation.
  • Seam, zipper and fastening details.
  • Approved cleaning agents and drying method.
  • Replacement-cover availability and identification system.
  • Relevant product documents for the final model.

For an order, identify the exact cover on the approved sample. A supplier changing to a visually similar material can still alter cleaning requirements or fit. Agree that material substitutions need review before production.

Match the cover to the environment

Choose based on the routine you can realistically maintain. A setting with frequent surface cleaning may prioritise a verified wipe-clean construction; a home may prioritise a particular textile feel and removable covers. Confirm those priorities through sample inspection rather than assuming either material group is always the better option.
