To clean a memory foam wedge pillow, start by separating the cover from the foam insert and reading the care instructions for each part. A washable cover does not make the complete pillow machine washable. Treat an unknown foam construction cautiously until the supplier confirms an appropriate cleaning method.
Identify what can actually be washed
Look for a zipper, an inner liner and a sewn-in care label. Photograph the original arrangement before removing anything, especially if the wedge contains several layers. A liner may be intended to stay in place. Do not cut it open to reach the foam.
Check for separate instructions covering washing temperature, drying method, bleaching and dry cleaning. If the label is missing, contact the supplier with the model reference. Guessing a hot wash cycle can change the fit of a cover or damage an unfamiliar coating.
Remove dust before treating a mark
Take off the outer cover gently without pulling on the pointed end of the wedge. Shake loose debris from the cover away from the exposed foam. If the manufacturer’s instructions permit vacuuming the insert, use a gentle upholstery attachment without digging into its surface. Stop if the foam begins to tear or shed.
Inspect seams and the zipper while the cover is empty. A damaged zipper can catch the foam when you put the cover back on. Repairing that problem first is easier than forcing the insert through a restricted opening.
Clean the cover according to its own label
Wash the cover separately when colour transfer is a concern. Use only the detergent and cycle permitted by the care label, and avoid adding fabric treatments without checking compatibility. Close fasteners as instructed so that they do not catch other fabric.
Dry the cover using the specified method. Do not put a tight, partly shrunken cover back on a wedge: the resulting tension can distort the shape and stress the stitching. Check the empty cover against its original dimensions if the fit has changed.
Handle spills without saturating the insert
Blot a fresh spill with a clean absorbent cloth instead of rubbing it deeper into the foam. If spot cleaning is explicitly allowed, test the permitted solution on a small inconspicuous area and use as little moisture as possible. Never assume steam cleaning, soaking or a washing-machine spin cycle is suitable.
Deep contamination is different from a small surface mark. If liquid has penetrated the core, or the pillow develops persistent odour or visible deterioration, ask the supplier whether replacement is the appropriate option. Surface fragrance does not establish that the inside is clean.
Dry completely before reassembling
Support the pillow in its normal shape in a ventilated place, following its drying instructions. Avoid unapproved high heat. A surface that feels dry does not necessarily mean a thick insert is dry throughout. Do not seal damp foam inside a cover or storage bag.
Once both parts are fully dry, feed the foam into the cover gradually. Align the tall end, low end and corners before closing the zipper. The cover should follow the shape without pulling the wedge into a curve.
Make the next cleaning easier
- Keep the product label or a photograph of it with your purchase record.
- Use a compatible washable protector if the supplier offers one.
- Address spills promptly rather than waiting for stains to spread.
- For wholesale orders, request care instructions for the actual cover and foam combination.
The essential distinction is simple: clean the cover as a textile and the insert only as its manufacturer permits. This approach preserves the wedge’s fit while avoiding an inappropriate washing method.
