Home     /     Blog     /     How to Measure the Gap Between Your Mattress and Headboard
By Mr.Sun

Measure the gap between your mattress and headboard at several points before choosing a filler. The opening may be uneven, and a soft mattress can move during ordinary use. A single measurement at the centre is often not enough to describe the space accurately.

Put the bed into its normal position

Check that the mattress is correctly positioned on its intended base and that the frame and headboard are assembled properly. Do not use a foam filler to conceal a loose or damaged frame. Resolve the underlying furniture issue first.

Remove bulky bedding from the gap so you can see the edges clearly. Keep the normal mattress protector in place if it affects the fit. Note any topper that extends beyond the mattress edge.

Record three different dimensions

Measure the side-to-side length of the opening, its front-to-back depth and the vertical space relevant to the proposed filler. Record which dimension is which on a sketch. Suppliers may list dimensions in different orders.

Take the depth measurement at the left, centre and right. If the headboard curves or the mattress edge is rounded, photograph that profile. Do not assume the opening is a rectangular channel.

Check ordinary mattress movement

Observe whether the mattress shifts when the bed is used normally. Measure again after repositioning it. If the gap varies, record the range instead of selecting a filler based on only the smallest opening.

A filler should not be forced into place so tightly that it distorts the mattress or strains its cover. Ask how the proposed design is intended to sit and whether it needs a particular backing surface.

Distinguish filling from restraint

A headboard gap filler can occupy an unwanted space in an adult bed setup, but it is not a structural repair, safety rail or guarantee against entrapment. Do not use a decorative foam accessory to make an unsuitable bed arrangement safe.

These measurements are not instructions for adapting an infant sleep space. Keep infant sleep surfaces free of pillows and positioners and follow current official safe-sleep guidance.

Send a clear supplier brief

  • A sketch showing width, depth and relevant height.
  • Measurements from at least three positions.
  • A side photograph of the mattress and headboard profile.
  • Information about mattress movement and any topper.
  • Preferred cover material and care requirements.

Ask for the finished dimensions and tolerance of the proposed model. Confirm whether the measurement includes the cover and whether a compressed product must recover before checking its size.

Check the sample in place

Fit the sample according to the supplier’s instructions, then check that it sits evenly and does not migrate during normal use. Inspect cover tension and access for cleaning. Remove it if it creates an awkward opening or interferes with the intended bed setup.

Repeat the measurements after replacing the mattress, changing the headboard or adding a topper. The size name on the bed may remain the same while the actual gap changes substantially.
